Gimpshop VS Photoshop

Description

I am for a free world and I support using open source free software.
Therefore, because I have just found this, I thought it would be great to share with you.

"If you feel at home in Photoshop, but need an open source alternative - Gimpshop is the way to go. Gimpshop is a hack made on top of the original Gimp project which changes all menues, dialogs, etc., in order to make them look as much as their counterparts in Photoshop. This makes users who are already familiar with the layout of Photoshop feel right at home in this open source application. Please note that all features in Photoshop are not available in Gimpshop, since it is based on the Gimp project and it's feature set."

I tend to agree to some degree, although I'm fine with GIMP as is. The main issues with GIMP are a lack of support for more advanced print-related features that you would use on a daily basis, ie. Pantone support, CMYK, bleeds, etc. Also, the organization and consistency among the tools could be a bit more consistent. Not to mention the limited PSD support.

Of course, much of this will be fixed soon, but I don't see GIMP getting Pantone support any time soon. There are also a few more corner cases that make GIMP fall short a bit in that area, but I have confidence most of them will be solved in time.

That said, GIMP has plenty of features and plugins that are totally beyond Photoshop, many of which influenced Photoshop's recent updates (so they can catch up). I can only hope Photoshop will adopt .ora so we can get beyond choosing tools based on formats and start choosing tools based on productivity.
